An Overview of Electrical & Electronics Engineering

Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE) is a branch that deals primarily with the understanding and application of electricity, with some emphasis on electronics. EEE is, by general consensus, considered one of the tougher branches of Engineering. One of the reasons being that EEE requires a considerable degree of visualisation about things that cannot readily be seen, such as electromagnetic fields or the path current takes to flow in a circuit, as opposed to watching a gear train move or the output on the console of a computer. Another point of difficulty is the considerable use of mathematics in the branch. But if you have an inclination towards EEE, you must go ahead and opt for it.

As the name suggests Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) is a branch that deals primarily with the understanding and application of electricity, with some emphasis on electronics.

The topics that are taught in EEE include:

§  Electric Fields deals with the understanding of the working of electric fields and Maxwell’s equations,

  •          Electric Circuits and their Analysis

  •        Design of Analogue and Digital Electronic Systems

  •       Digital Signals and their processing

  •       Control theory and its use in controlling plant processes

  •        Electric Machines

  •        Communication Systems

  •       Power Systems including energy generation, distribution and management and the challenges associated with the same, power electronics, embedded systems and instrumentation.


EEE is also referred to as one of the core engineering branches. The branch is a fairly old and established one, with course content in the electrical segment remaining more or less similar for the past 30 years. More recent advancements include the use of simulation software and advanced microcontrollers which are easier to use, and in a distributed grid system



Despite being a fairly old branch EEE has scope in the upcoming fields of IOT- which is associated with embedded systems, and smart grids. Distributed Grid Systems is an idea where rooftop solar panels and other such small generating units are distributed across the grid to generate electricity locally. This needs to be actively tracked to ensure grid stability- all of which falls under the scope of a smart grid. From placement perspective, there are several PSU’s and private companies that are willing to recruit engineers such as power plants, steel and manufacturing, electronics design, embedded systems, etc. This is in addition to the non-core fields such as analytics, marketing etc. companies that allow EEE candidates to sit for.

Eligibility: A student from any stream, be it Science, Commerce or Humanities can pursue this course. In most of the colleges, admission is based on the percentage attained in class 12th board examination.

Course Content: The course stretches for a period of three years which are divided into six semesters.

The first two semesters provides an introduction to sociology and sociology of India. In the third and fourth semester, students are taught sociology kinship and religion, economic sociology and political sociology. In the final year, students learn sociological theories and methods of sociological research and social stratification.

Career Prospects: BA (Honors) in Sociology is an academic undergraduate course. Immediate job offers are difficult after graduation, but once you have completed your master's degree in the same field or the related field, jobs are easily available at both public and private sectors.

One can go for Masters in Sociology or can also study related subjects like social work or international relations. Many students also pursue MBA in HR or International relations.
